HBS at 50

On this page members can find details of the Civic Reception with Glasgow City Council to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of HBS, including the link to register your interest in attending, which is here

This page also has information on how to send images and audio, which will be included in a presentation during the event, also how to submit your 'HBS Memories', where members - past and present - recall their time at HBS, including introducing a piece of music which reminds them of their time volunteering.

Following a delay because of lockdown, the Lord Provost is hosting a Civic Reception at the City Chambers on Thursday 13th October from 7 PM.

Attendance is free of charge and is open to all former and current HBS volunteers. Everyone attending needs to register and be on the guest list for the event. We really encourage people to sign-up as soon as possible so we have a good visibility of the numbers attending. We have people living in the south of England signed up, so hopefully distance won’t be an issue. We also have people who were involved back in the 70s coming, so don’t be put off thinking that it’s only an event for recent volunteers. While the event is a formal one, smart dress is perfectly acceptable.

There is an on-line sign-up form and everyone is encouraged to share the link with any former volunteers they are in contact with. We’d really like to see former volunteers coming along in groups as well as individuals who will definitely be made to feel very welcome. It would be fabulous to see a large turnout celebrating the achievements of the past 5 decades.

The Civic Reception, which will include some refreshments and a finger buffet, will last until around 8:30 PM. After this we would encourage everyone to continue the socialising in the various establishments close by, but there won’t be any formal follow-on event being organised by HBS.

Do You Have Any Old Pictures Or HBS Show Recordings?

If you have any old pictures (in electronic format) or audio from your HBS days, we’d really appreciate if you could share these with us well in advance so they can be included in an AV presentation on the day.

HBS Memories

In the run-up to the event, we are going to be including HBS Memories on-air from our former volunteers. For this we simply need you to provide a good quality recording of you reminiscing on your time at HBS and finishing with introducing a piece of music you associate with your time at HBS. Simply email us the recording (no need to send the music file unless you really want to) as an attachment or share a link to where we can download the file (e.g. WeTransfer). Again, if you want to get involved with this, please send us your audio file as soon as you can so the production team doesn’t end up with a last minute deluge.

Golden Jubilee Fund

Although the event is free, if you are wanting to make a contribution to the ongoing running costs of The Service, we would greatly appreciate donations to keep hospital radio on the air in Glasgow.  Many of the traditional income sources that HBS has had in the last couple of decades have dried up because of Covid and we would definitely appreciate being able to sleep soundly at night without worrying about paying the bills.  Donations can be made on-line via the website’s donations page here. If you prefer a more traditional approach, we still accept cheques.

The Last Chance to Celebrate HBS Formally?

You may be aware that, following a recent request from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde for a single hospital radio service to provide entertainment to their adult wards, HBS and Southern Sound Hospital Radio are now in discussions about merging into what could well be a new organisation with new on-air branding etc. So, this event celebrating 50 years of HBS Glasgow could well be the final one. We’d therefore definitely encourage you to come along to the City Chambers on October 13th.
